An extraordinary antique gilt brass jardinière featuring elaborate Renaissance Revival detailing, rich golden tones, and an impressive architectural silhouette. This substantial piece is adorned with intricate scrollwork, classical winged female figures, ornate lion head handles, and beautifully sculpted decorative elements throughout.

Perhaps its most fascinating feature is the fire breathing salamander prominently displayed on both sides, a motif closely associated with King Francis I of France (reigned 1515–1547). Francis I adopted the salamander as his personal emblem, often depicted surrounded by flames, symbolizing resilience, strength, and the ability to withstand adversity. His famous motto, Nutrisco et extinguo, translates to “I nourish and I extinguish,” referencing the salamander’s legendary relationship with fire.

The inclusion of this royal emblem, paired with the elaborate Renaissance inspired ornamentation, suggests a piece influenced by French Renaissance design. Believed to date to approximately 1880–1920, this jardinière beautifully reflects the historicist decorative styles popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
