Dimensions: 9” tall x 10.75” wide (handle to handle)
A beautifully detailed French lidded tureen featuring classic black transferware decoration, with delicate florals and a refined border that wraps gracefully around the form. The elegant silhouette is complemented by softly curved handles and a charming finial lid, making it just as striking for display as it would have been for the table.
The underside bears the mark for Grand Dépôt de Porcelaines Anglaises – Terre de Fer, Marseille, a retailer and distributor rather than a direct manufacturer. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French “dépôt” houses like this sourced ceramics—often from English factories—and sold them throughout France under their own stamp. “Terre de Fer” refers to an ironstone-type earthenware, prized for its durability and everyday usability while still maintaining an elevated, decorative appeal.
This piece likely dates to the late 1800s to early 1900s, a period when transferware in monochromatic palettes was especially popular across both England and France.
Condition:
In antique condition with visible crazing throughout and areas of staining consistent with age and use. These characteristics add to the authentic charm and story of the piece. No major structural issues noted.
